DECEMBER 2011

Dear Friends,

Greetings are a beautiful holiday’s tradition.

This year, together with the usual resolutions, we would like to promote the search for a signal of trust, objectiveness and optimism.

Happy Holidays!

NOW IT'S HARVEST TIME FOR REDS

August was very hot and has fastened the ripening of the grapes. We started harvesting the youngest vineyard towards the end of the month. This timing reminds us of vintage 2007.

Most of the time, due to the high temperatures, we have picked up only in the morning, making the harvest last longer and leaving more time for the cellar activities.

White wines have a greater structure with a richer and less direct bouquet. Our first impression is that this could be the vintage of Pinot Grigio. Now it’s time to harvest Merlot and Cabernet.

SCENT OF RIPE GRAPES

The coming week is crucial for the 2011 harvest. Harvest time is getting closer very quickly. It is not easy to interpret this vintage, there are many different aspects which are at the same time interacting and contrasting: maturation phases started quite early, July was cool and rainy and in this central part of August we are experiencing African heat. As usual we are trying to do our best and I’m sure that we will stand out also with vintage 2011 wines.

PINOT GRIGIO IS CHANGING COLOUR: 22nd JULY 2011

It’s mid summer, days are long but pass quickly and also in 2011 we will have an early harvest.

Leaf plucking, cluster thinning and bottling filled our agenda up, not leaving much time for holidays.

We are used and prepared to face it!

DISCOVERING A NEW VINTAGE, 2010

A good wine-maker needs to live by following the rhythm of the seasons, trying to understand them and meet their needs in order to feel the real essence of each vintage. Limits can become qualities, and these can make them different from the standardisation of the market.

More acidity and less alcohol are the main characteristics of vintage 2010. If compared to the most recent harvests, wines show less strength (structure) and more elegance (balance). Maybe many people were looking for this kind of wines, wines which are closer to the traditional Friuli style which has been nearly forgotten.

It’s the same as listening to music at a lower volume, and it is well know that good music gets better at low volume!

LA VILA 2009

A Friulano with Nordic appeal

We started from an idea of pureness, 100% Tocai… we will always call it like this. Our purpose is to concentrate only on two elements: environment and grape variety.

It is not yet time to speak about the wine itself, we need to let him develop, but we can surely affirm that we focussed on the pureness of the fruit, letting aside all the techniques which make wines develop in a “forced” way.

His name recalls the typical Friulian habit to describe with one word only even customs and traditions.

La Vila was the space where in old country villages the institutional, public and amusement activities used to coexist.
