Lis Neris
By Ian D'Agata
Lis Neris Gris Pinot Grigio 2009
Rating: 91
Bright straw-yellow. Floral, scented nose of yellow apple, pear, honey and wet stone, with an overlay of vanilla. Supple and spicy, this midweight pinot grigio offers a suave texture and captivating flavors of pear, apricot, licorice and sexy oak. Finishes seamless and juicy, with very good length. Each year, Gris can be ranked in the top five or six pinot grigios of Italy.
Lis Neris Sauvignon Picol 2009
Rating: 90
Medium-deep straw-yellow. Aromas of tangerine, melon, dried flowers and spices are a bit stunted by oakiness. Bright and sweet on entry, then nicely stuffed with energetic citrus fruit and ripe green fig flavors. The broad finish features a savory quality.
Lis Neris Tal Luc 2007
Rating: 92 Amber-tinged golden-yellow. Very intense aromas and flavors of cane sugar, ripe peach, white chocolate, raisin and mango. Intensely sweet creamy and thick, but with very good acidity providing necessary lift and giving precision to the rich flavors. The finish is very long and mouthcoating. |

White Blend, Venezia Giulia
An Editors` Choice
“…I served this wine with endive salad and smoked salmon and it was absolutely divine. The blend of white grapes delivers delicious aromas of yellow flower, peach, creamy vanilla and crushed almond. It leaves a silky but rich impression in the mouth thanks to tonneau aging and traces of residual sugar; has enough body to match the smoky flavors of salmon. — By Monica Larner (5/1/2007) …”

JANIS ROBINSON - June 2005
Great whites from Friuli (http://www.jancisrobinson.com/articles/wineweek050628)
Publication date: 28 jun 05
Do I have to apologise for recommending another white wine this week? Probably yes to you southern hemisphere dwellers, especially if you are shivering. But the white wines I am writing about this week are so substantial and so packed with flavour that I hope they are of interest to you too. They’re certainly not tart, vapid little numbers that are worthy only of being severely chilled and thrown down an overheated throat. In fact they are some of the most complex whites you can find today.
I refer to the finest dry whites of Friuli, which in my opinion means those made of the region’s most characteristic grapes (although there is no shortage of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grown here). This Blanc de Rosis 2003 Schiopetto blend from the incomparable house of Mario Schiopetto is made from a blend of Tocai Friulano (perhaps the variety to which he was most attached personally), Pinot Grigio, Ribolla, Sauvignon Blanc and Malvasia and is seriously fruity yet nervy with as many layers of flavour as you might expect from this varietal cocktail. Honey and flowers are conjured up but the whole is a distinctly dry, refreshing drink worthy of the table. I can’t think past the proscuitto and melon I had for lunch today, without wine alas. Lea & Sandeman are currently selling this for £14.95 a bottle but according to winesearcher.com you can find it in Italy for as little as 11.25 euros.
But this is far from the only Friuli white worth raving over. Lis Neris is the king of Pinot Grigio and the Pecorari family`s Tocai Friulano, Fiore di Campo 2004 Lis Neris, £11.75 from Berry Bros (find this wine), is also delicious, though perhaps just a bit too young at the moment. A greater wine, though very definitely designed to be drunk with food too, is their top Pinot Grigio Pinot Grigio, Gris 2002 Lis Neris, £14.25 at Berry Bros (find this wine). This smoky essence of Pinot Grigio is just coming into its own now and is quite extraordinarily persistent. I much prefer it to Lis Neris’s supercuvee of Pinot Grigio, Traminer and Riesling Confini 2003 which they are flogging for £21.59 a bottle and which is just too fat and flabby for my taste.
There are many driven, small-scale producers in the region. Gravner’s wines are highly individual, but perhaps just a bit too individual for me. But I came across recently the wines of Ferdinando Zanusso of I Clivi in Corno di Rosazzo who has 12 hectares/30 acres of particularly old (40 to 60 year-old) vines from densely-planted hillside vineyards in both Collio and Colli Orientali which he seems to transform into the entrancing wines. He apparently leaves them for two years on lees in stainless steel before bottling – and they certainly taste super-natural. No low-temperature fermentation aromas or evidence of any extraneous yeasts. I tasted his Clivi Galea, Colli Orientali del Friuli bottling of old Verduzzo and Tocai Friulano from the vintages 2001, 2000, 1999 and 1997 the other day and was extremely impressed by all of them – even the eight year old was still going very strong and the 1999 was quite stunning for current drinking. The wines are apparently imported into the US by Kermit Lynch of Berkeley and Ballantynes of Cowbridge are considering importing them in to the UK. They say they would charge between £15 and £20 for these vintages, truly rewarding essences.
I urge those of you who are yet to discover this rich seam of top quality white wine to go mining immediately.

The Pour: New Wine in Really Old Bottles
By ERIC ASIMOV
Few places on earth have such a concentration of determined, individualistic winemakers as the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy.
(...) "At the core of all this is the fact that these people are all about identity and not about ideology," said Fred Plotking, author of "La Terra Fortunata: The Splendid Food and Wine of Friuli-Venezia Giulia" (Broadway Books, 2001). "You find your identity in the soil, in what you produce from the soil and in what it says about you."
Few areas in Italy embody so many paradoxes. From its southern extreme, the regional capital of Trieste, on the Adriatic, Friuli-Venezia Giulia stretches north through snow-capped Alps to Austria. The region itself is actually the combination of two areas: Friuli, which accounts for much of the land, and Venezia Giulia, in the extreme southeast.
More than any other region, Friuli-Venezia Giulia continues to make wines from indigenous grapes, among them ribolla gialla, a beautifully floral white; tocai friulano, which can be crisp, refreshing and minerally; and refosco, which produces dark, fruity reds. Yet many wines carry familiar names like merlot, cabernet franc, sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio and chardonnay, French grapes that were introduced 200 years ago by Napoleon`s army. (...)
Today some of Italy`s best white wines, clean crisp and fragrant, come from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, from winemakers like Schiopetto in the Collio wine district, Lis Neris and Vie di Romans in Friuli Isonzo, Scarbolo in Friuli Grave, and Livio Felluga and Bastianich in Colli Orientali del Friuli. Reds, too, can be striking, although aggressively herbal style of merlot, for example, that is favored in the region is far from the chocolate-covered-cherry style embraced by much of the world. WINE & SPIRITS ( Summer Whites ) - August 2005
All of Italy was available to taste at the VinItaly fair in Verona this past April. And Among all of the wines I tasted there, the one that has stayed with me the longest is a pinot grigio, the yet-to-be-bottled ’04 from LIS NERIS in Friuli. It has the spring scent of narcissus, as white as the chalk mineral character that sustained those fresh impressions of flowers. Tasted in the midst of thousands of Italians talking and gesticulating as they wandered past, the wine was substantive enough to make a lasting imprint in my memory. Pinot grigio can do that in this part of the world (….).
